"If you are on the fence about whether to buy and read Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson, I have an answer for you: Do it.
However, I should warn you, the book isn't for the faint of heart. It's 656 pages in the hardcover edition, which translates to a couple thousand on your iPhone if you buy it as an e-book. It covers a lot of ground, from the initial pairing of Jobs and Steve Wosniak in a garage to the rise and fall of Jobs at Apple Computer (Nasdaq: AAPL), to Pixar (Nasdaq: PIXR) and "Toy Story" to the passive-aggressive takeover of Apple 12 years after he was shown the door. Of course, there's the iPod, iPhone and iPad, and the worldwide juggernaut that Apple has become, spawning astounding products, amazing ad campaigns and millionaires left and right.
But that's the best or worst of it. If you dive right into this bio, you might also learn that Steve Jobs was a mean, emotional train wreck of a man wrapped around an intense and focused genius capable of masterful manipulation of others and utter self-delusion. I've got to say, I had a hard time slogging through the "sh*t" -- and it is sh*t, as Jobs was so apparently fond of saying about anything and everything that didn't amaze him -- about his "abandonment" as a child when he was given up for adoption and his subsequent abandonment of his first daughter. As a young man, Jobs was pathetic and sad. Oh, and this whole notion that his fruitarian diet meant that he didn't have body odor or need to shower? Well, you might have some questions come up, like, "How can a guy be so intelligent, so amazingly insightful, and yet be such a freaking idiot?"
Of course, as a creative genius, Jobs was astounding. Mesmerizing."

Lytro Comes Into Focus (AsiaD Demo)
"For a generation now, camera development has been measured in megapixels, but Lytro, which demoed today at AsiaD, is hoping its new camera will constitute the biggest leap in imaging since we swapped film for digital.
The company, founded by Ren Ng in 2006, has built a whole new kind of camera capable of performing a number of tricks that standard digital cameras just can’t do. The technology works by capturing a whole scene and digitally recording all the light available, instead of bringing a specific element into focus.
Lytro calls the resulting images “living pictures,” because each one contains more data than the single visible frame can display. After taking the picture, users of the camera can choose what they want in focus, and even switch between 2D and a subtle 3D image."

DealBook: The Survivor Who Saw the Future for Cantor Fitzgerald
By By SUSANNE CRAIG
Published: September 3, 2011
"TEN years and a lifetime ago, Howard W. Lutnick was a prince of Wall Street. Forty years old, and already the head of a powerful financial house, he could peer down on rivals from his office on the 105th floor of One World Trade Center.
Then — you know the rest.
American Airlines Flight 11 struck Tower One. Three out of every four people who worked in New York City for Mr. Lutnick at the brokerage firm Cantor Fitzgerald died that September morning, 658 in all. Among the dead was his younger brother, Gary.
That Howard Lutnick survived was, he concedes, blind luck. Some people died because they happened to be at the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001. Mr. Lutnick lived because he happened to be taking his son, Kyle, to his first day of kindergarten."

Russian market battered as global markets wilt
"Russian markets have been caught up in the global selloff which has seen the Dow Jones close 4.3% lower overnight with the FTSE 100 in London down 3.4%. In Moscow, the MICEX was 3% lower at 11.00 AM after opening 4% down.
Friday trade has seen Asian markets continue to slide with Australia down more than 4%, Hong Kong down 4.7% and Tokyo down 3.6% with concerns over the global economy ranging from Eurozone sovereign debt fears, to weak U.S. growth figures, to inflation in China dogging investors who have seen sentiment reverse since spring.
In Moscow the MICEX has opened 4% down after taking a 2.1% hit on Thursday.Brent Crude is holding at around $107/bbl, with the WTI price in the saturated U.S. market falling further to $85.56/bbl at the close of U.S. trade – its lowest in 5 weeks. Most industrial metals are lower with gold trading at $1660/oz and beyond as far vas an all time high of $1684.90/oz.
The nerves weighing on investors globally after the U.S. debt ceiling negotiations of last weekend, were frayed further with ECB President Jean Claude Trichet revising his outlook for the Eurozone economy at the same time as European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso called for a deepening of the Eurozone bailout mechanism, adding he had ‘deep concerns’ about Italy and Spain. The comments reverberated through Euro markets in Thursday trade and set the scene for heavy falls in the U.S. overnight."

The Myth of Green Energy Jobs: The European Experience
"With $2.3 billion in Recovery Act tax credits allocated for green manufacturers, President Barack Obama and other Democratic politicians have high hopes for green technology. But their expectations clash with both economic theory and practical experience in Europe. Green programs in Spain destroyed 2.2 jobs for every green job created, while the capital needed for one green job in Italy could create almost five jobs in the general economy. Wind and solar power have raised household energy prices by 7.5 percent in Germany, and Denmark has the highest electricity prices in the European Union. Central planners in the United States trying to promote green industry will fare no better at creating jobs or stimulating the economy."

The Green Economy Withers - Investors.com
"Green jobs were supposed to be our salvation, both for the earth and for the economy, according to the Obama administration. White House policy based on this flawed premise led to offshore and onshore drilling bans and the locking-up of energy-rich lands while huge alternative energy subsidies (aka "investments") found their way into the stimulus and other legislation.
As happens when government tries to pick winners and losers, the government lost — no, we all lost. As has happened in countries such as Spain, this misallocation of resources has succeeded only in stalling our economy as unemployment and debt grow.
In Spain's case, it was found that for every "green" job created, 2.2 jobs were lost in the rest of the economy."

Forex @ DailyFX - U.S. Dollar Plummets as Bernanke Suggests Further Easing on Horizon
The U.S. Dollar plummeted against a basket of currencies at 14:00 GMT as Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke began his testimony at the Semiannual Monetary Policy Report to the Congress, in which it was evidently clear that the Federal Reserve was ready to continue its loose monetary policy – and thus further devalue the U.S. Dollar – in order to boost growth prospects for the U.S. economy.

Apple Said to Eye March 2 for iPad 2 Launch
"Apple is expected to launch its new iPad on March 2, contrary to speculation of a delay of the latest version of the popular tablet computer.
One person familiar with the matter said recent speculation about a delay until June was "simply not true" as Apple is planning a launch in the same seasonal schedule as the first iPad, which went on sale in April 2010.
Apple will host an event on March 2, where the company is expected to take the wraps off the newest iPad model, an individual with knowledge of the situation said. Apple declined to comment."

Become a Command Line Ninja With These Time-Saving Shortcuts
"The command can be quite powerful, but typing in long commands and file paths gets tedious pretty quickly. Here are some shortcuts that will have you running long, tedious, or complex commands with just a few keystrokes.
Power users love the command line for its ability to perform complicated tasks with just a few keystrokes. But for beginners who don't know the shortcuts and type everything out longhand, it can seem like it takes forever (I know this because I'm just past beginner myself, and I still didn't know most of these shortcuts).
From simple keyboard shortcuts to built-in shorthand to commands you can build and customize yourself, the Terminal has a ton of ways you can speed up your command line work, and here we're going to show you some of the basics (as well some customizable features that you can use to shorten pretty much any command you want).
If you're just getting started with the command line, we recommend you also check out our command line primer for beginners. Heck, even if you're not a beginner, skim through it—you're sure to find a few things you didn't know. We'll be touching on a few of those subjects and building on them here, too."
